train ride to India

I heard the strains of the Yanadi folk song before I saw him…fringes of my eyes lifted and took in…limpid chocolate pools that…reflected the vista…picture imprisoned in thick panes of train windows…we were passing painting by the hand of …heaven’s elves…canvas that changed with each turn of the trail…with each note from his brown cherry lips…he stopped when he realized…I was staring at him …“hello miss”….pink and white fingernails were the end of white cocoa knuckled fingers… grasping headrest of his well worn leather seat…he struggled to stay upright as…the train jostled us home to… “hello…”….i didn’t say more…I wanted him to keep singing…song telling me stories of his skin burnt brown like his mothers naan oven…I wanted him to keep speaking…lilting honey laced sound selling his soul to merchant of my heart’s affections…I wanted him to keep looking at me…child eyes…demanding that I recognize the meaning of this space in our lives…when he brushed my skin with his baby breath and ….fed me sweet tea…the kind his mother poured from the leaf infused bottom of her…wedding china…humid Sunday afternoon when neighbors…sat on verandah cane chairs…gossiping and swatting at flies…the only motion amidst the sun’s stillness….for a moment I loved him like my own…until… he pursed his lips and resumed his song….breaking away from my gaze…he turned around in his…well worn leather seat…and…seeing that he was gone from me…I…went back to my book…a thousand pages unseen…I relived my life with the Yanadi child on the Amtrak train car to Buffalo…
….I still want to run my fingers through his tight brown curls….and…give him treats from the depths of my bosom…because for those moments…he was mine.

...my lover walks with me...
I roam these mind-less streets and…think on you…on the scent of your spirit…/rousing me to burn each morning as i…reach for you…on…/warm breathy kisses on my…inner curve of my...thigh…distracting…disarming…so…off the beaten path/on sitting across from you at that…cafĂ© table…/separated only by…single yellow rose…coffee carafe and blueberry scones…/I smell your linen shirt…Armani Black Code and…pine cones…/on finger painting on baldness of your scalp…/tracing your train of thought…erasing memory of that…last time we fought…/on …falling asleep on your back…lazy Sunday afternoon…those idyllic days were over too soon…/on…how you are forever close to my mind…elusive section of my soul I never imagined I’d find…/and in fearful happiness…trembling contemplation of what has become inevitable loss…/I kneel in chocolate-wrapper littered street…and say a prayer for us.
resurrection morning
From the confines of this arbor…in…the center of our…modest spanish hacienda…/I select flower arrangement to…celebrate our engagement of…/twin thoughts formed from cross section of skin fragments so fine…/I recall the labor of each re-emergence when…/determined to find each finger on your hand…/I groped through embers of long dead recollection…/vowing that I would find you…/through bitter pain of each betrayed revelation/under foul rock of defiled romance…/between bloodied pages of aborted love short-story…/destroyed desire somehow always found a way to become…fellowship with face always so…familiar…/I see again this time so similar to…that morning when…all the hounds of hell could not stop our sun from rising…/I am happy in the thought that my heart remembers the glory of love…like rush of blood to my head.
Love in a time of hunger
I love you.
I raise my hat to the spirit force that…forces its way between our comingled thoughts every-time I think about how… I love you…/I shelter my heart from pain of happiness I relive when I remember how…I have loved you…/I drink from reservoir of constant belief…banked by disdain for my foolish heart that somehow never ceased to…love you…/I turn aside and take in images of…the many lives we will live inside those times we…/will love until our imperfect eternity…/our acceptance of our love’s immortality…this marred affinity…that…/plunges me into its twisted design…/I realize there is no hope…I have become resigned…/to this us…/this love…this thing…this….(sigh)…
I love you.

…in this old house…
Sifting through instances of weakness…I know now that…/that perfect time will never come…/in this search for that sun-kissed season…/for one more reason…/I reach right now for my life…/at the tip of the steps of this old house…/I discover papa’s old clock in aged attic awning.../mocking frozen fingers of father time whisper to me to…wait no longer for dream stranger…/to pray even stronger for my own heart to become my savior…/to walk on pea green river…/with rock knowledge that my faith in my uncertain foothold will bring me to…wide open spaces of…discovery…/golden tributary of…branches leading to life of golden possibility…/and in these denim tight pockets of time/when in my head I celebrate my future victories…/I applaud when my fingers of time spring to song again…/I crochet bigger footprints on the tapestry of my life.
